There are a lot of freelancing websites out there, but I only have few favorites among them.

In that case, I listed the top 5 freelancing websites that are best for virtual assistants like us. I also listed the most important features that each of them should have. These sites are easy to understand and navigate.

  1. goLance

They are new in the marketplace, yet they are the first on my list. What I love most about them is that you don’t have to bid on the projects, unlike other freelancing websites.

FEATURES
Time tracker Yes
Work diary Yes
Guaranteed payment* Yes
Bid-base application** No
Fixed rate Yes
Hourly rate Yes
Can work a freelancer Yes
Can open an agency Yes
Advance payment*** Yes
User friendly interface Yes
Cost Free
Service fee 10%

Also, you can migrate your Upwork profile in this site in which I found very handy. If you have an existing Upwork account, you can easily copy your profile so you will not be building your profile from scratch.

*You can only guarantee your payment if you’ll only get/apply jobs from guaranteed payment clients.

**Unlike other freelancing sites, goLance don’t use connects or credits for you to apply for a job.

***goLance have a feature called goCredit. If you have a couple of projects and have a good reputation, you can request an advance payment from goLance, and they will just deduct the advance payment in your next payment.

  1. Upwork

Before, Upwork (formerly oDesk) is my top choice. I started and got my first client through oDesk which is now the Upwork. When oDesk merged with eLance, this is where some red flags arise to some freelancers. Like they have now paid membership, change the amount of their service fee based on your income.

However, Upwork is not that bad at all and still on my top 2. I still use their platform as I still have great experience in getting clients from here. I also have a satisfaction experience with their support team.

FEATURES
Time tracker Yes
Work diary Yes
Guaranteed payment* Yes
Bid-base application** Yes
Fixed rate Yes
Hourly rate Yes
Can work a freelancer Yes
Can open an agency Yes
Advance payment*** No***
User friendly interface Yes
Cost Free – $10/month
Service Fee 5% – 20%

If you are new or just planning to open an account in Upwork, I suggest that you go with the paid membership plan. There is nothing wrong with starting with the free membership; however, please ensure that you’ll only apply to jobs where you have the most confidence (I believe that this applies to paid membership too). And if you are in a free membership plan, please have in mind that you must limit your application and give more attention to your application. It just that, I have a couple of freelancers who receive a deactivation notice because they’ve sent the maximum application and got denied. Upwork thinks that their platform is not best to them.

*You can only guarantee your payment if you’ll only get/apply jobs from guaranteed payment clients.

**Upwork is a connect base application. This means that you need to use connects or credits to apply for a job. Each application requires 1-5 connects (0 connect is required if you are invited or rehired).

***Unlike goLance, you cannot ask advance payment to Upwork. You can only request an upfront payment to the client in the fixed rate projects, but this will be depending on your negotiation.

  1. Outsourcely

Outsourcely is entirely different from the first two. Outsourcely offer a direct hiring and direct payment in between you and your client. It only seems to be a directory of talents, in which freelancers are free to sign up. It is only the employers do need to pay the membership fee for them to be able to browse freelancers’ profiles, post a job, and hire.

FEATURES
Time tracker No
Work diary No
Guaranteed payment* Yes
Bid-base application** No
Fixed rate Yes
Hourly rate Yes
Can work a freelancer Yes
Can open an agency No
Advance payment*** No
User friendly interface Yes
Cost**** Free – $10/month
Service Fee 0

*Even though Outsourcely has no time tracker or work diary inside their platform, you can still have the confidence that you’ll get paid. This because you can assure that the clients here are the serious ones (might not all but most). This why, to ensure the payment, you can ask for an upfront payment (depending on your negotiation) upon starting a project and that you must have a signed agreement.

**There is no connect/credits involve in applying for a job. You can apply to as many jobs as you’d think you fit in but be sure you can do the job as it describes.

***Advance payment will be depending on how your meeting with your client goes. As I’ve said, even though most of the clients here are legit, you must also ensure that you will do free work.

****Though this platform is free, you have the option to upgrade your account, so your profile will be featured and that clients can easily find you.

NOTE: Oursourcely is only for experienced freelancers. An experience is a must. You will be asked to verify your account by entering your past client contact details. And for that, they will be sending your previous client an email, asking them if they know you. Without this, your profile will not be displayed in the directory of talents, and you will not be able to apply for any job at all.

  1. Fiverr

Fiverr is no longer a 5-dollar base gig. You can now set your price from $5-$995. Fiverr is the go-to-place for clients who wants to get their project done asap. Although Fiverr is a gig-based freelance site, you may also find long-term potential clients in here.

FEATURES
Time tracker No
Work diary No
Guaranteed payment Yes
Bid-base application* No
Fixed rate Yes
Hourly rate** Yes
Can work a freelancer Yes
Can open an agency*** Yes
Advance payment**** No
User friendly interface Yes
Cost Free
Service Fee 20%

*There is no connect/credits involve in posting a gig or sending proposals.

**Fiverr gig is not an hourly-based job. However, you can still offer a package which would how many hours include in the package.

***You can open an account of your agency in Fiverr; however, you must specify it on your profile that you are an agency. Because there is no difference of an individual freelancer profile to an agency one,

****Buyers did pay in advance when they ordered your gig. But, you can only get the payment after the service has been delivered and you satisfied your buyer.

  1. Hubstaff Talent

Hubstaff Talent is a free talent pool from Hubstaff. Hubstaff is a tracking tool for freelancers. This platform is built for employer-freelancer direct relationship.

FEATURES
Time tracker* Yes
Work diary* Yes
Guaranteed payment* Yes
Bid-base application** No
Fixed rate No
Hourly rate Yes
Can work a freelancer Yes
Can open an agency Yes
Advance payment*** No
User friendly interface Yes
Cost Free
Service Fee 0%

*Hence Hubstaff is a time tracking tool service, they do have a time tracker and work diary. However, it is only optional but highly recommended. And only when using Hubstaff time tracker can give you the guarantee of payment, it is because they will automatically bill your client upon invoice.

**There is no connect/credits involve in applying for a job. You can apply to as many jobs as you’d think you fit in but be sure you are able to do the job as it describes.

***Since Hubstaff Talent is a direct hiring platform, you can only tackle any advance payment with your client.
